“A few well-designed movements, properly performed, in a balanced sequence, are worth hours
of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortions.”

What is Pilates Mat Work?
The classic Pilates mat work is made up of a progression of 34 exercises performed on a mat, in a class or on your own. These exercises work to move the body in a variety of different ways to develop the “core” – the muscles that support the trunk of the body – as well as the arms and legs. Performed with focus and awareness, the mat work builds stamina, strength, length and balance in the musculature; while enhancing breath, concentration, control, and fluid motion. As one of our clients put it, after class you feel “buff but loose!”

Why Should I Take Pilates Mat Classes?
Pilates mat work builds fundamental movement skills that are important not only for Pilates, but for your whole life! Done well, Pilates mat work builds strength in the muscle systems that create specific integrated support for the spine, pelvis, shoulders and hips. The things you work on in mat class create better structural support, athleticism, resiliency and injury prevention. These are skills that will support fitness through all the various stages of your life.
If you’re new to Pilates, the mat work is a great place to start. You’ll learn about good spinal alignment, about how to access your deep system core, about stability in the pelvis, spine and shoulder girdle. You’ll learn how to articulate your spine and breathe well.
You can learn Pilates on your own with videos and books, but the best way to learn is in a class with a great instructor. The old adage, “we don’t know what we don’t know” is true here! Having guidance through the exercises, and feeling your way into new movement patterns is the best path to creating different results than ones you’ve had before. These things are best learned in a small class setting.
How is Pilates Mat Work Different from
Pilates with the Apparatus?
Joseph Pilates designed his whole body of work as a complete system. The mat work is a key element of that system, and when practiced consistently it is profoundly beneficial to the work on the Pilates apparatus. But even if you never look at a Pilates reformer, the mat work provides the depth of work that creates an amazingly strong foundation. Once you’ve learned the mat work, you can do it at home on your own, and take it with you anywhere! The mat work can be modified to support and manage challenges along the way too. Pregnancy and the post-partum period, illnesses and injuries can sometimes create challenges for your workouts. With some careful attention and awareness, mat work provides possibilities for just about every stage in life.
The Pilates apparatus includes the reformer, the Cadillac, the wonder chair, the ladder barrel and several others. These pieces of equipment allow us to add load or support to the work in an almost limitless variety of ways! The Pilates apparatus work provides a resistance component to the training that the mat work cannot. Mat exercises can be a great way to start and transition to the equipment work. If you’re seeking significant structural change, then the equipment work is likely something that you’re going to want to explore at some point.
What Sets Moving Spirit Mat Work
Apart from Other Classes ?
We are a small Pilates studio dedicated to achieving meaningful results for each client. We know first hand how this work can profoundly affect not only our fitness but also the ease and efficiency we feel when we move. We can let go of struggle to find connections that support us. We can explore life beyond pain. We can start to move freely without strategizing our movement for comfort and safety.

Moving Spirit mat classes max out at 5 people per class. That allow time for lots of personal attention, questions and feedback. It’s more like personal training in a small group setting! We love the mat work – and we love helping you to find how it works for you best. Our reformer/apparatus classes are small too – only 4 people in each class! You'll never be lost in a crowd.
Our priority is making sure that you learn this work in a way that guarantees your best results! Our expert instructors have decades of experience with the Pilates method, as well as years of training in other movement modalities and sports. But the bottom line is always that you matter. And how you move matters. We’ve got you, every step of the way!
